What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks (also called striae) are similar to scarring on the skin. They are most frequently caused by:

• weight gain – significant weight gain and weightlifting

• pregnancy – hormone changes and weight gain

• puberty – growth spurts and hormone changes

• medication use – Corticosteroid creams, lotions and pills

  When the skin is stretched beyond its limits, it causes damage to connective tissue fiber which causes lacerations (the result of ruptured blood vessels). A stretch mark initially presents with a red, purple color then over time become a silver or white color. Although the discoloration may diminish over time, the stretch marks will remain to some extent.
