Melanoma Detection

It’s always good to keep an eye out for melanoma on your own during the course of your days. If you notice something different on your skin that you haven’t seen before, first of all, keep an eye on it and watch to see if it changes, but also you can determine if there is a possible reason for concern by remembering your ABCs. Specifically A, B, C, D, and E.

Asymmetry – The shape of one half does not match the other half.
Border that is irregular – Are the edges ragged, notched, or blurred in outline? Is the pigment spreading into the surrounding skin?
Color that is uneven – Shades of black, brown, and tan may be present. Areas of white, gray, red, pink, or blue may also be seen.
Diameter – There is a change in size. Melanomas can be tiny, but most are larger than the size of a pea (larger than 6 millimeters or about 1/4 inch).
Evolving: The mole changes over a few weeks or months.
