Acne and Acne Treatments

Acne (also known as acne vulgaris) is a common skin condition that affects almost all people at some point in their life, but to varying degrees.  It is most commonly found on the face and neck but can be found anywhere on the body.  While it is more common in teenagers, it also affects over 20% of all adults.

What Causes Acne?

As a teenager’s hormones increase due to puberty, the oil glands also increase production of sebum.  Bacteria collecting in the pores of the skin in combination with excess oil secretions causes inflammation.  This inflammation can present itself in a number of different ways including:

  • Open comedones (blackheads)
  • Closed comedones (whiteheads)
  • Papules (red bumps)
  • Pustules (pus bumps)
  • Cysts (painful deep nodules)

Most individuals get smaller papules that are easy to treat with careful cleansing at home. However, an individual may develop more severe cystic nodules or repeated episodes of papules. Repeated or severe cases of papules can lead to permanent discoloration or scarring of the skin tissue.

Acne Treatment

Treatment for acne varies on the severity and type of acne.  Most patients notice significant improvement in their acne after 4-6 weeks of treatment with one or more of the following.

  • Topical Antibiotics
  • Topical Retinoids
  • Oral Antibiotics
  • Oral Hormonal Medications
  • Accutane

Along with prescription medication there are also in-office dermatologist-performed treatments that work well and fast:

Seeking treatment from High Valley Dermatology is necessary when individuals experience inflammation in the skin tissue to help prevent scarring.
