Skin Care Resolutions for the New Year

Skin Care Resolutions for the New Year

As we head into a new year, High Valley Dermatology would like to remind you of a few important ways to care for your skin.
Remember, ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the most common cause of skin cancer.  Even in the winter months, when the sun is less prominent, it is important to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 during winter activities. Prevention is key to avoiding skin cancer. Click here for more tips on skin cancer prevention from High Valley Dermatology.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that all adults have an annual skin exam by a dermatologist, while those with a personal history of skin cancer be seen more frequently, usually every 3-6 months. Adults and children with a family history of melanoma are at an increased risk for developing skin cancer and should also have routine skin exams.
In addition to a yearly skin check, you should examine your own skin once every month, taking note of any new or changing spots. Studies have shown that those who do so are more likely to catch skin cancer early on.
Everyone, regardless of age, sex, or skin color, is at risk of developing skin cancer, but there are some factors that increase that risk. Here are some of those factors:

  • * light skin, hair, and/or eyes
  • * freckles
  • * repeated sunburns
  • * use of tanning beds
  • * many moles (50 or more)
  • * reduced immune system

Remember, the vast majority of skin cancers are curable if caught early enough. Make a resolution this year to care for your skin!
