Taking measures for Skin Cancer Prevention is always important, but especially so in the Summertime.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and accounts for almost half of all reported cases. As exposure to UV rays has been linked to basal and squamous cell carcinomas, as well as the more serious melanomas, one of the major prevention tactics for these cancers is avoiding excessive time in the sun. However, as summertime rolls around and families take to the outdoors to enjoy the wonderful weather or participate in watersports, the necessary steps to prevent damage often get neglected. This summer, Dr. Lindsay Sewell, Dr. Brandon Miner, Dr. Lena Gowring, and Joseph Anderson PA-C and High Valley Dermatology asks that you take just a little time out of play time to avoid the serious side effects of UV ray exposure.
Our top tips for Summertime Skin damage Prevention are:

  • Stay out of direct sun! – Shade should be you best friend, especial during the midday hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Stay covered up! – When spending a significant amount of time outside be sure to wear clothes that cover your arms and legs as well as a wide brim hat and sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use sunscreen and reapply! – Apply about an ounce of sunscreen 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. Choose sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
  • Reapply every 2 hours or after heavy perspiration or swimming. Waterproof sunscreen lasts 80 minutes while water resistant only lasts 40 minutes.
  • Avoid tanning beds – There is absolutely nothing good for you about indoor tanning. Tanning beds dole out the kind of ultraviolet light that causes damage such as wrinkles and cancers . It also does not provide vitamin D, which you can obtain through foods which may be the healthier way to go.
  • Avoid tanning in general – A base tan does not prevent damage, it only adds to it.
